New Waverly, Texas – Around 9 AM this morning an 18-wheeler struck some power lines near the New Waverly City Hall on Gibbs Street.
The truck appears to have minor smoke damage from the arc the power lines created upon being pulled down by the truck’s 13 1/2 foot tall trailer. It appears only one utility customer was impacted by the incident.
Elsewhere around the area, Entergy was conducting routine maintenance in the area of Hwy 75 and FM 2296. The scheduled maintenance impacted over 300 customers with power outages this morning.
Utility crews were also in the area of Hwy 75 in New Waverly assisting an oversized load moving through the area. Neither incidents were linked to damage caused by the 18-wheeler.

]]>New Waverly, Texas – Local fire crews are responding to the California wildfires. A crew from New Waverly and the Montgomery County Emergency Services District 2 are on their way to the Sacramento area.
Approximately 100 specially trained Wildland Firefighters and their equipment have been called up by Governor Abbott in response to a request from the State of California.
Over 100 wildfires are burning across California and the Pacific Northwest, including the 375,000 acre Park Fire, near Chico.
Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management and Texas A&M Forest Service to deploy firefighters to assist with wildfire response efforts in California following a request from CAL Fire through the California Office of Emergency Services.
Officials said the Park Fire had grown to more than 383,000 acres as of this morning, an area nearly half the size of Rhode Island.

AUSTIN – On Friday, July 19, around 7:45 p.m., members of the Texas Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Radiation/Nuclear Detection Unit, along with the Upton County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Transportation and other local agencies, responded to the scene of a truck tractor semi-trailer on fire along State Highway 329 northwest of Rankin, Texas. The trailer was transporting UN3332—a radioactive material that contains Cesium-137 which can pose a serious health threat.
The road was immediately closed by local authorities, and DPS personnel began taking action to ensure the public’s safety, as well as that of the first responders who had been exposed to potential radiation.
DPS Corporal Scott Keane screened the area for radiation using his vehicle’s radiation detection system and found the area was clear. Corporal Keane and Corporal Dustin Henderson then conducted radiation contamination surveys on each of the first responders using their handheld radiation survey equipment.
Once Corporals Keane and Henderson had secured the burned truck tractor semi-trailer and determined the area was safe, the company was allowed to safely transport the UN3332 back to its facility.
The road reopened to traffic around 11 p.m.

About DPS’ Radiation/Nuclear Detection Unit
DPS’ Radiation/Nuclear Detection Unit is housed under the Texas Highway Patrol and is made up of eight commissioned personnel who have advanced training in the field. The eight personnel are stationed throughout the state. The unit includes six field corporals who have specialized radiation/nuclear detection technology in their vehicles allowing them to respond to emergency situations as needed.
